Matterhorn Bound- Tunnels trains and more tunnels ...
Arrived Zermatt around 5.45 ... (reception shut at 6). Camp site was full of hard core buff out door types, many climbers sorting their gear and loads of mountain bikers. 23 Euro but awesome location nestled beneath huge towering peaks beside a snow fed stream.
The sound of rescue helicopters echoed in the valley as did the Matterhorn train which is probably 15 metres away from my tent. A cool chill in the air and it is trying to rain with the crack of thunder in the distance.
However my belly is full just made the co-op that shut at 7 (warm bread sardines lettuce and corn chips...) washed down with cheap Swiss Beer - so life is good. Just took my rubbish to the bin and two other bike riders turned up - they noticed my arm band and had also been to the Swiss HU meeting - it’s a small world and they camped beside me. They rode a similar route to me today, but not the train ride... he is a keen mountain biker so we might ride to the Matterhorn tomorrow.
Awoke early 7 ish and the camp site after 8 hours unbroken sleep - somewhat of a record! The site was already moving with people, some keen to make an early start as many had work on Monday! and some had some big rides ahead of them.
Chatted to to lots of folk and shared my contact details with several attendees that I had met over the weekend. Went to pay my beer bill ( how much...surely not...).
Then I started packing, slowly and more HU attendees started coming up to me and chatting. Bryn from Perth stippedvand I said would buy him a beer when he gets back to Perth in October.
Thierry Wilheim caught up with me and his mate, they had taken me on an awesome loop ride yesterday and showed me a nice route to get to Italy
