So today we thought we take it easy and not start so early as we did yesterday.
So as we were coming back to Cairns today, we thought that we would check out the Wildlife Sanctuary in Port Douglas for a couple of hours, we ended up staying for half the day. It was an awesome place, totally unexpectedly better than what we thought it would be like.
The moment you walk into the park you get to meet the beautiful birds on display. They get to fly free around, only a very few are actually in cages. There are 4 different habitats you can walk through, The Wet Lands, Rainforest, Savannah and Woodlands. In each of these habitats you find birds and other animals. We got to meet a Cassowary up close but not too close. Got to feed the wallabies and kangaroos. They were so cute and friendly. The best was sharing the café with some of the birds. There were some very interesting characters - Neddy the Yellow Crested Cockatoo who was truly hilarious and a real escape artist, refusing to stay on his perch and only willing to do what he wanted to do.
The Gallah who only liked men and was very hesitant with women. The Galah tried to bite mum when she tried to give him a scratch which was hilarious. His friend who also enjoyed having a walk around didn't like when you came to his level to take photos and would attack you. The black Cockatoo who every time you take a photo would clean his feathers. You also had the rainbow lorikeet who loved to pose for photos.
We ended up staying there for 5 hours. Finally, on our way to Cairns, stopped over at some of the sights like the stack up rocks, and made one of our own. The stacked rocks have no meaning and are built by people passing by.
We got to the Caravan Park, another Big 4. Although it was a very nice place it felt like the retirement village in "Cocoon". So we decided to come back to Coconut Resort, which was more kids friendly.
