Today was the longest day driving. We saw lots of red dirt, lots of cattle and lots of roadkill.
We started today leaving Cooktown very early and heading for Laura, a two hour drive. Laura is a very small town but is famous for old aboriginal rock art. We went to the Quinjan Cultural Centre first to learn more about the local aborigines. The centre was great, there was lots of information about the local tribes as well as the local rock art and even information on cattle in the area. Once we finished looking at all the exhibits we headed for Split Rock, one of the aboriginal rock art galleries.
It took us 30 minutes to hike to the rock art. Most of it was uphill and Loic was complaining as usual. The paintings we saw are between 15,000 to 30,000 years old. They are protected by UNESCO and are one of the top 10 rock art sites in the world. We loved seeing the rock art but still think the ones we saw at Ubrir (Kakadu) last year was still the best we have seen. It was hard to make out all the things painted, we could see people, both men as women as well as dingos, turtles, bats and even an echidna.
We were soon back on the road. We stopped at Lakeland and again did a lunch stop at the Palmer River Roadhouse, we loved their hot chips. On the way we saw a few large road trains but could only manage to grab a photo of a small road train.
Just before getting to Mossman we saw a rest area called "Abattoir Swamp". Dad could not stop laughing at what an awful name they picked for this rest area.
Tonight we are staying at Big4 Port Douglas. We love this place it has a water park and pool. We spent hours swimming!
Tomorrow we will be seeing a few things in Port Douglas before we head to Cairns.
