To get from Savannah to Washington DC we took the train. As it was a 13 hr trip, we had sleeper car for our journey and as we left at 1am, we had the opportunity to get a bit of shut eye. I think I have converted Sean into enjoying rail travel. Yes, it does take longer but it is so much more relaxed and you see so much more which is great as you travel through states and see our the landscape changes especially as we got closer to fall season. I was also excited that we went past Quantico, couldn't do that from a plane!! We finally arrived in Washington dc and had this wonderful taxi driver and it wasn't too far a journey from Union station to where we were staying in foggy bottom. I can highly recommend the hotel where we were staying - the george Washington inn. It had cooking facilities so it cut down some of our food costs and you could walk everywhere from there. It was also very close to the railway station. Washington is fabulous because you can walk everywhere and the majority of the attractions are free, so it is doable for people on a tight budget. We found a place Friday's, we became our local (or should I say Sean's local watering hole). I do believe we were probably the only white people in there the majority of the time but not once did we feel intimidated in fact we were taken under the wing of the self proclaimed mayoress of Friday's - miss dani. Miss Dani used to work for the FBI which was very impressive. The group of people who went there were a motley crew - students, cleaners mainly from the george Washington hospital but always respectful and laugh, they were a great group of people. I think we did every monument, only managed 1 museum of the smithsonian and of course we did the spy and crime museum. We also got to experience what happens when the prez is on his way to and from the White House - just incredible. On our second last day we went to Arlington and saw the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier, goosebumps and then caught the train to the pentago to look at the memorial for 9/11. I will give it to the Americans, every memorial and monument we saw was absolutely stunning and respectful. So after pounding the pavements of Washington DC, it was now time to head to O' Canada - Montreal to be precise!
