Hi everyone!
Sorry for taking so long, I haven't been alone for a second ever since I arrived Sunday afternoon!
So far it has been amazing and mind blowing. I'm falling deeply deeply in love with Cape Town and its people.
First thing first: I arrived safely at the airport on Sunday afternoon after travelling for 22 hours. Luckily I didn't listen to the Schiphol lady who said I did NOT have to pick up my backpack when checking in again at Johannesburg for my local flight to Cape Town, because I would've ended without luggage..
Anyways, I got picked up by my superb couchsurfing host JJ and his mum! For those who do not know what it is, couchsurfing is an online network on which hosts and couchsurfers connect. Hosts open up their house/room/couch for couchsurfers to sleep in/on free of charge, in order to show their city through a local point of view, and to get to meet new people. Sometimes if they are not able to host you for the night, you can also meet up for coffee or spend a day/evening together. I am convinced there is no better way to get to know a city. And JJ was my very first host of this adventure! He has shown an unique level of hospitality. It's like I'm staying at a friend's place, and I could never have imagined that when leaving off to Africa.
Directly after arriving in Cape Town, I dumped my backpack at JJ's place and went off to: feed wild squirrels, drive through city center, walk through Waterfront Bay, sign up for Great White Shark Cage Diving, lunch at an American café with ocean view, drive up the road next to Table Mountain for amazing views, meet JJ's friends and last but definitely not least, bowl with JJ's friends. Can't say I had any problems falling asleep late in the evening!
Next morning I got picked up by another host, Don, who showed me around for the day. Went to Boulders Beach to see the penguins, and drove further down to Cape Point. While driving we spotted baboons, and at Cape Point we got to see seals chilling next to the cliff, an ostrich strolling around and 'bontebokken' enjoying the peace.
But before we got to Cape Point, we had quite the happening! Just when we turned the corner, we saw a car crashed underneath a serious avalanche. Apparently 10 minutes before we got there, the whole side of the mountain came down as 2 elderly ladies from NY and their guide had stopped to take pictures of baboons. They were standing on the other side of the road when they heard a cracking sound, and seconds later the mountain came down. On top of their car! As we stopped as well to see if they were doing ok, the baboons decided it was fun to start throwing some rocks from the top of the mountain that was still intact. Gotta say I got a whole new view on wild baboons!
After Cape Point we enjoyed Fish & Chips in Hout Bay, saw another seal and some penguins, and after another great day with host Don I was dropped off to meet Louise, a Dutch friend from friends of mine. We ended up eating Mexican, and when I was dropped off at JJ's place I can only say I had an amazing time with her.
Tuesday, day 3 in Cape Town, JJ took me up to see UCT, the University of Cape Town. Wauw, it made me feel I missed out on a lot while studying, and it was a lot of fun seeing all these students walking from left to right and right to left. After this tour JJ introduced me into the world of Geocaching, and oh what a fun is that! Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices, such as your smartphone. You navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Sometimes extra clues are added, such as 'The number of steps the monument are your last 2 digits' etc. When you find the hidden container, you can exchange an item in the container for something of you, or sometimes an item 'wants' to travel further and the owner to be updated via an e-mail address left behind. It's not that complicated as it sounds now ;-) And even saw that there are treasures hidden in de Goudse Hout, where I walked the dog my entire life in Gouda!
After the treasure hunting we went to Cape Town city centre, and met up with a big group of couchsurfers and hosts for Sweet & Sour, a short-movie event that is hosted worldwide. Felt like I was in Berlin, it was so retro and had such a cool vibe!
All together I've had 3 AMAZING days in Cape Town, and can only imagine things to go down after this. Tomorrow I am scheduled to go diving with white sharks (in a cage), so it seemed fitting to write a blog with 10 fingers and 2 hands BEFORE that.
Next on the agenda is hiking up Table Mountain and abseiling down, and I have been invited for a party-night on Friday and another party on Saturday, so think I will be heading off into the Great Unknown from Sunday onwards. It will be sad to leave Cape Town after it has treated me so well, but I got so much more to see and do!
Take care all and thanks for sticking out till the end again!
Much love :)
PS. I bet there were a few people thinking I fell in love with someONE, gnagnagna!
