We arrived in San Francisco after our drive up Highway 1 and after a circuitous drive around the city, over 3 bridges, mostly in seafog, out to the airport we managed to leave our hire car and catch the BART into the centre of town. Our hotel was on the edge of an area called Tenderloin which is a pretty down market part of town, many rough types buying beer by the single bottle in 7/11 stores. There were security guards on the theatre doors during the day!! We were however very close to the city centre and so walked to the cable car stop to go down to Fisherman's Wharf. The cable car was exciting!! We were on the outside hanging on and you had to be careful when you passed another one coming the other way!! We visited the Maritime Museum at Fisherman's Wharf which had a good selection of boats, many of which you could board. All this time the Golden Gate Bridge was shrouded in seafog and not very visible.
We caught up with a friend of Dan's, Gerry, who took us for a walk around the Castro area, which is the gay heart of San Francisco. It was coming up to the big gay parade so the shops were all decorated and there was a film festival on, with a queue down the street! We saw where Harvey Milk had his shop and where the AIDS quilt was started.
On our last night we went back to Fisherman's Wharf for a seafood dinner - so much choice - and very good.
