Dunedin, New Zealand
Wednesday 11th March
We have returned to New Zealand to the Otago region of the South Island. Today we are visiting Dunedin which is a place that was settled by the Scots in 1848. They named it Dunedin which is the old Gaelic name for Edinburgh. We berthed at Port Chalmers and took the shuttle bus into Dunedin. We stopped at the Octagon in the middle of town where there is a statue of Robert Burns in front of St. Paul's cathedral. We went down to the railway station which is the very impressive building in the photo. It is impressive inside as well with mosaic floors and stained glass windows. We took a train from here that took us on a scenic trip around the beautiful Otago harbour. When we returned to the town later we went to visit The First Church which has a 185 foot spire. It's first pastor was Thomas Burns who was the nephew of Robert Burns. We also visited the cathedral before heading back to Port Chalmers. We walked up from the port to a memorial gardens where you could climb up to a look out over the port and the surrounding area.
