Rachel's Travelling
Actually now i have arrived back from Fraser but as there is no internet or, anything on the island it is very difficult to keep this updated.
We arrived at Hervey Bay late because our bus broke down on the way, we do have some interesting luck! That was ok though as both Monica and i were dying for the toilet, very handy. We eventually got to Hervey Bay after about four hours and were given the scariest briefing ever. The woman who ran it was patronising as hell and Monica and i both independently decided that this didn't seem as fun as we'd both imagined.
After the briefing we were scared witless of dingoes, sharks, the car rolling over and pretty much everything. We met our group who were, as i suspect always happens on these trips, a strange mix of people. There were five germans, one swede, four english people and one australian.
Next day we got the ferry across to Fraser, and we were not exactly looking forward to it; instead of looking like a tropical destination Monica and I both felt like we were getting the ferry to Colonsay! Thankfully the weather cleared up and we had the most perfect blue sky the whole time we were there.
Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and has a really unusual environment as a consequence, its full of wild life and covered in a rainforest and fresh water lakes. We spent most of our time swimming in fresh water lakes (shown in the picture), walkling through rainforests and tackling dirt track roads in a 4x4. I think one of the best things we did was driving down the east coast beach when the tide was low, it was absolutely perfect!
The camping was great as well, we used a gas stove as a campfire as you aren't allowed them on the island. The presence of the campfire was really useful as a dingo deterent as well. I don't know whether it actually worked but it certainly made you feel safe. The dingos were acutally really cheeky and would come right up to you and smell your knees whilst you were going to the toilet and they know how to open cooler boxes so you have to put all the food in the car at night. They eat absolutely anything!
As well as dingoes on the island we saw a whole host of sea creatures off indian head a rock cliff that has increadibly deep water underneath. It was teaming with manterays, turtles, dolphins and we saw an eagle take a fish right out of the water.
Another great plave was eli creek, a fresh water spring on the island, water was beautifully clear, you could see fish swimming next to your feet. Our enjoyment of this was tainted slightly by the news of terrorist attacks in london, we had no way to get any information and just had word of mouth as our news resource. All the people that were really worried managed to find out that there immediate family were ok, which was good.
On the last day we nearly got swept up by the tide but, we survived and ended the trip on the lakeside playing ultimate frisbee! I hope the Whitsunday's are as good!
