Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Leaving the Old Town we walked back out a few city blocks to two twin Madrassa's facing each other. These were in a poorer state of repair being a little further out from the Old City.
With so many buildings is hard to restore everything and will be a slow process working their way down from the most prominent ones.
We passed by a Puppet Theatre which I thought was a Soviet addition but my guide explained it was a traditional local custom which I wasnt aware of.
The two opposite Madrassa's were just a block away and quite impressive.
They were both of the same design. One was for the King, one for his mother. The one for the King is taller than the one for his mother.
When people asked why is yours taller than your mothers, since respect is supposed to be higher for a mother, it was pointed out that the taller Kings facade tilts to bow towards the opposite mothers Madrassa (though I couldnt see any tilt).
The tilework was very detailed and different pattern styles from other buildings. The Kings Madrassa is locked but the mothers was open.
Its in a poorer state of repairs and has been taken over by pigeons. I didnt feel that safe and was worried about being splattered so left after quickly taking some pics.
The archways, alcoves, and their tilework however is very detailed and unique from other building designs.
The winds were still quite strong and it was now time for lunch. We went to a restaurant but still sat in the outdoor terrace which had plastic drapes to keep the winds out.
I'm not sure what all the choices were but I understood pilow as we get that at the Uzbek restaurants in Korea. I was starting to feel ill today from the cold weather so wanted something I thought would be simple on my stomach.
From so much travelling I was already feeling motion sickness from the plane to Tashkent, then flight to Urgench, and 9 hour drive to Bukhara.
That probably made me more susceptible to getting ill. Lunch total was 6000 Som ($3) each which we had with tea and traditional bread. The rice had raisins to make it sweet and sliced pieces of carrot. There was only one piece of lamb in the middle.
Our driver had met us in the restaurant and joined us for lunch so after leaving I asked if we could stop by the hotel so I could get my scarf and earmuffs as it was quite cold today and I was getting quite ill
