Adventures of a Global Wanderer
At Incheon Airport I found the Thai Airways counter and hoped to get my boarding pass as I just had hand luggage. There was a massive line snaking thru the terminal. The Thai Airways check in kiosks were not working, a frustrating experience I had in China. There was one counter at the end that said 'hand luggage only' as this has been the case with previous flights. I tried to go there but a Thai Airways lady stopped me. I kept pointing to that desk saying that I only had hand luggage, but she said the display was wrong and that I had to stand in line. This seemed absolutely ridiculous as the line was barely moving and seemed more than an hour as everyone was checking their luggage. After 15 minutes in line I decided to try to goto the hand luggage only counter and ask them, as a lady was sitting there but nobody was going to the counter. Happily she gave me a boarding pass, so I didnt understand why the lady before kept saying I had to stand in line, other than the fact that maybe she didnt understand english. I was also worried about weight. There were signs posted saying 7kg when my booking said 10kg, so I took a bag of food out which was 2.5kg but luckily they didnt weigh the bag. When I went to the security gate they stopped and weighed my bag and said I had to check it as it was over 7kg. This is ridiculous when an airline has said 10kg but the airport is enforcing 7kg. So I said ok and just took my bag back. Then I walked round the terminal to another security gate. This time I took stuff out my bag again but they didnt stop me to weigh it. Now inside the terminal I tried to find the free internet lounge. I noticed here they also had free showers, something to keep in mind next time if I have a long flight connection or early morning arrival. On the flight there seemed to be lots of pakistanis taking connecting flights back home. Like lost homing pigeons they always come to me and ask for help how to get to the gate. Sitting next to me on the plane was another pakistani. Unfortunately, he was over 350lbs, passed out, overflowing from his seat, and snorting thru his sleep all thru the flight. This always frustrates me about baggage allowance. I know they have a formula where they have calculated the average body weight and come up with 20kg checked baggage per person. However I was much lighter than this person and did not have any checked baggage. Therefore I was well under my baggage allowance and did not see why they would have to make such a fuss about my one piece of hand luggage. The food was nice but as I was resting my head against the window I noticed something move. To my surprise it was a cockroach!. When it came back I killed it with the inflight magazine. Later there was a second cockroach so I killed it again. Now there were two dead cockroaches on the magazine. Before leaving I handed the magazine to show the two dead cockroaches to the stewart and asked them to report the plane, which they probably wouldnt have done. They must have travelled from Bangkok to Seoul as the temperature in Korea was near zero so too low for them to have come from here, as well as the fact that I have never seen cockroaches in koreal. Arriving in Bangkok airport was one of the worst arrival halls processing. They always insist on filling out arrival cards, yet there were no arrival cards on any of the counters. Some australians said they were given theirs on their flight but we werent given any. Then a guard was holding a stack like a treasured possession and not handing them out so I asked for one. The counters were even worse. It was 1.30am but I dont understand what they were doing. One person would process maybe 10 people. Then he would leave the counter while a replacement took over. After another dozen people they would switch counter staff again. Was this musical chairs really necessary at nearly 2am? I seemed to have the slowest line. The two lines on either side were overtaking me but my line wasnt moving. I think the guy was maybe not PC literate and very slow. After one hour in line I finally cleared. I was worried my airport pickup would have left. As I had no checked baggage I was free to leave now. I found the meeting point for my hotel. A lady was there and had to call the driver so said to wait 10 minutes. In the meantime she asked if I'd like a cigarette! Finally I made it to the hotel. There were many stray dogs chasing the van and barking. The receptionist was a strange crossgendered mix I couldnt make out. The room was really nice and amazing. The towel was folded in the design of a flower. If I had more time this would have been a nice place to stay and relax. In the morning a free breakfast was provided of poached eggs and toast. I then took the hotel shuttle back to the airport to take the airport train into town. There was an express and local train so I took the cheaper one for 35B ($1.15) As the train rode the more than half hour into town making local stops I was surprised to start seeing mosques. They were very large and elaborate. It was hard to take photos from the moving train but I got a couple. It was surprising that all I was seeing were grand mosques yet this was bangkok and not a temple in sight. At Makkasan I transferred to the subway for 20B ($.65) to ride to Hualumphong train station where my hostel was. When I got there I decided to buy my ticket ahead of time for my trip to Ayutthaya the next day. The train ticket was 245B one way ($8) on an hour long express train vs the slower 2 hour train. The hostel took some navigating to find. There was a sign not to let 'bad people' inside!. Also if you bring people into your room you will be checked out immediately. The receptionist was another strange manly athletic built 'woman'. I thought I booked a private room with ensuite but shower stalls and bathrooms were outside. Also like a hostel in spain the rooms all faced an interior courtyard and windows were just bars with curtains so not soundproof. But the place didnt seem too noisy and was a quiet neighbourhood so hopefully not the late night drinking crowd. Now I could dump my bag and start exploring proper.
