Adventures of a Global Wanderer
After the final night of terror at the hotel I waited for first light so I would have light thru the bathroom window in the event of a blackout. After 6am I was able to take a shower and was out of the hotel by 6.40am.
I now needed to get something to eat and drink since nothing was accessible in my room as the ant infestations would engulf any food or drink items. I had told the 24 hour restaurant I ate at last night I would be back in the morning
I had two grilled fish pieces for breakfast and told them to bag three pieces of fried chicken for me to eat on my flight. I was startled when they said the total was 190P ($4.75) and I told them to check again.
Yesterday I had had fish, chicken, 4 veggie items, and coke, at this same restaurant for only 150P. Now they are charging me 190P for less items with no drink. I told them this very fact.
Then they started telling me about what each item cost. I reminded them that yesterday I had ate more items here with coke for only 150P. It was only 7am and I asked if these were fresh items or leftovers from last night, which they were, to which they just looked at me.
I told them I had three pieces of fried chicken the other day from another vendor for only 60P. Also I had a big meal up the street with rice and coke for only 90P the first day I came. Had I known they were so expensive I could have gone back there.
I tried giving 100P but ended up giving the 190P. Again these are not large amounts to me but its the fact that people know I'm a foreigner so make up new prices. I had told them yesterday that I would be back this morning on my way to the airport so I was giving them more business.
Instances like this and my first cab ride when I arrived for 500P just leave a bad impression of a place. I was quite upset at them charging me more at the same restaurant for eating less, these were leftover items from last night, and they knew that I knew.
Its not worth arguing over $2 so I just paid and left. Its the principal of it and that people were trying to do this daily. I stopped by bakery and got some different cake items I wasnt able to eat in my hotel for 5P (.07 cents) each.
Then I hopped on a passing airport jeepney for 8P (.20 cents). I was at the airport in about 15 mins and was the only person at check in I was so early.
I asked to change my row to a window as the seat I had coming had no window and I had the same seat number. You also have to pay a departure tax of 40P ($1).
Then in the waiting lounge a lady came over with a menu offering breakfast for only 75P ($1.75). After the fight I just had at the restaurant this was so ridiculous. I even told the lady I had just paid 190P for breakfast and had I known I could have ate here for less. I also got a water bottle for 15P (.35 cents) as I had nothing to drink from last night. Another lady was offering massages.
The flight boarding time was 9.25 and after a plane had just landed they started boarding passengers at 8.40. I was confused if this was my flight to Cebu or a wrong flight to Manilla. They checked my boarding slip and I saw other passengers with the same flight number as me.
The plane took off at 9am which was strange as our departure time was 9.45am. Even more strange I was double booked on an Air Phil flight to Manilla before I found a cheaper connection thru Cebu.
There was no sign of the Air Phil flight, nobody at check in, no passengers, and no flight. That flight was scheduled to leave 8.35 and there was no airplane. I was still booked on that flight as well and I never received any email about a flight cancellation. Had I stayed with that booking I'm not sure what would have happened?
During take off it was unusual as the farmland runs right against the tarmac and there were locals working there and the odd animal grazing. It was an odd feeling taking off. Why were we 45 mins early, and where was the missing Air Phil Express flight? I was hoping to see Santa Cruz Island but the plane went the other direction.
On the flight they played the same in flight game. They didnt even bother to change the questions and asked the same ones to raise a hankerchief, hand cream, or your hand. I raised a tissue in anticipation of the hankerchief and won a bag. It has no practical use however.
As we left Mindanao Island and neared Cebu there were many clusters of coral islands and reefs glowing from the sky. They formed a ring around islands and coastlines and glowed in a bright florescent manner.
I thought it would be nice to have a brief connection thru Cebu. I was about to find out otherwise.
