This entry is going to cover the whole Colombia - experience. Me and Roger arrived in Cartagena 3. desember, not really sure if we would find our third buddy, Andreas, or not. Therefore we got a nice surprise as we jumped out of the taxi at the hostel we were planning to stay when our bearded friend yelled out the window. In just a week I had expanded the wolf-pack with two members!
Cartagena was surprisingly nice and clean. I was made avare that Cartagena is the rich playground of Colombia, and it shows. Pretentious hotels, resturants and bars cover the beach-line. We didn't stay to long, but took the time for some sightseeing. Cartagena has a lot of history, among other things an endless pirate - war in the 15-19th hundreds. The city is fortified and hosts several very impressive fortresses.
Next stop was Minca, a coffee - paradise reccomended to us by Ludde. We stayed on the top of a hill, at a hostel called Casa Loma, with one of the best views I've had. We spent three amazing days with great home - picked coffee, bathing in waterfalls and watching the sunsets from hammocks in the hostels. Incredible.
Our jungel-adventure in Tayrona national park was every bit as awesome as I dared to hope for. We got in some nice trekking in amazing scenery, saw some big scary spiders, a snake before we even made it to our camp site. At playa brava, where we were staying, we slept in hammocks and tent and used our days walking around in the jungle, playing with the waves and trying to get some tanning on. At night we went "hunting" for blue crabs and watching bats and huge frogs jump around.
As I was out looking for crabs I saw three pair of eyes glowing in the dark. They just stood there, staring at me, for about 10 seconds while I was trying to figure out what I was looking at. My first instinct said it was three ozelots, but in the poor lighting I couldn't make out their distinct patterns. I've been checking out and reading up on the fauna in Tayrona and I'm now almost 98% sure they were ozelots, which is pretty f****g incredible. I've been dreaming about seeing big cats in the wild all year, and finally it happened; where I didn't at all expect it.
All in all, spiders, snakes, ozelots, crabs and whatnot was a massive success and I'll never forget Tayrona national park!
Our next to stops were Medellin and Bogota. Two big, interesting and very different citys. Medellin was the base of the biggest drug-cartell in the world and the home of Pablo Escobar. Now, it is more known for beautifull women, a keen sence for buisness and fun. It goes without saying, we had a great time. Roger and Andy decided to splurge for a day and book us into a suite in a nice hotel. So they did, but didn't expect Colombian prices. Their big splurge ended in a 700NKr a day suite , which is not even a s***ty hotel - room per person back home. So we ended up spending our two last days in Medellin here. Champagne in the jacuzzi, Nica - libres and late - night fun in Medellin was a great finish to an amazing trip.
Thanks to Roger and Andy for coming down and finishing of my trip with me. We had an awesome time, and hords of good memories and stories!
