Greetings from the desert of Namibia. Funny that this is where I should find an internet cafe! This morning we left at 5:30 to be the first on Dune 45 to watch the sun rise. The climb was higher and harder than we expected and we climbed while the sun rose. But it was beautiful and at the top we rested and watched the sun rise with a cool breeze blowing in our faces. It is now middle of the afternoon. The breeze is gone and the sun is damn hot! There's a digital sign here claiming the temperature is 40 degrees celsius.
South Africa was absolutely incredible. What a beautiful country! And there is much adventure to be had, many cultures to meet, adrenaline rushes, mountains and beaches to be explored. I had a great time there. Made it to Lesotho as well to visit the Lesotho people. Met some Canadians about my age in Durban that were there for a wedding. We had great fun on my one night in Durban. Stopped there on my way to Bulungula - my favourite stop. This is a backpackers run largely by the Xhosa community. We stayed in round huts. They have composting toilets and rocket showers. It is right on the beach where the river meets the ocean. Had fun fishing, horseback riding, visiting the village, and got up for pancakes on the beach at sunrise. It was raining so instead we had pancakes in the lodge and got to chat with a Massai on his walk for humanity. He's been walking for years and is on his way now to Egypt. Made up for the lack of sunrise, and we walked on a bit with him up the beach. (Rain having stopped.) I went tubing in Strom's River. Like white water rafting but you are in your own tube. Got lucky with perfect conditions and had a nice long ride!
Enjoyed a wine tour in Stellenbosch. Love South African wine! My favourite was a red called "Cape Jazz Shiraz".
Then it was just another half hour to Capetown. Managed to see a lot in three days. There is much to see and do here. Rented a car, picked dad up from the airport and we headed for the Cape of Good Hope. Went to Robben Island. Explored the city.
While South Africa is African, it's also a break from Africa, if you know what I mean.

patti marshall-casavechia Hey Debbie - I'm supposed to be doing report cards now but I was thinking about you and wondering how you've been so I caught up in your last 2 blogs. Sounds like you are having an amazing time and tour. The kids loved hearing their class and school mentioned in one of the last blogs. Take care, Patti
Robin Sounds like an exciting part of the journey. Have fun. Got your post-card this week - thank-you, the boys REALLY liked getting mail. Blessings, Robin
