We have been fortunate with very warm and sunny weather to enjoy this unique and gorgeous part of the United Kingdom. The original (ill-informed) plan was to see all of Cornwall in 4 days. However, the narrow laneways, many tourists and busy local traffic got the better of us, so instead we settled for exploring a few small villages and beaches along the south east coast of Cornwall.
Cornwall was traditionally known as a smuggler's haven, which is not surpising with it's many small, secluded coves and steep cliffs and narrow inlets. The sea is a beautiful colour but largely inaccessible without a long steep walk down to a tiny beach, followed by a hot, tiring walk back up again. Oh well, a good reason for another pint, perhaps!
The larger towns of Penzance and St Ives were way too busy - lots of tourists and the Brits on vacation! The smaller fishing villages of Mousehole, Mevagissey, and Fowey were much more interesting - very pictureseque and full of craft / art stores, as well as pubs of course! The cornish region is also very well known for its cornish pasties, icecream and clotted cream! There goes the cholesterol! However, we have done plenty of walking - along the coastal path with its steep up and down slopes and many steps! So, I feel that we have earnt our little bit of gastronomic pleasure.
Anyway, would love to come back here again - great place for swimming, exploring beautiful gardens, art / craft shopping, walking, eating and drinking a few pints or a glass of wine watching the sunset over the water. Ahhhhhh!
