Meet our guide Vu at 7:30 am for our journey to the Cu Chi tunnels, an elaborate underground network of tunnels built by VietCong and people living in rural areas during the Vietnam-American War. Certain things experienced today leave an indelible impression.
On our morning drive, we come upon a terrible scooter tragedy... A small group of people standing quietly in the middle of a roundabout. A few feet away, a body draped in a sheet directly in front of a cargo truck's bent bumper. Scooter on its side not far behind. Incense sticks next to the sheet burning like a road flare. Thinking this must happen all too often - the estimate given to us is 10,000 deaths each year throughout Vietnam.
Harbinger of day ahead, a day witnesssing the horror of war through both Vietnamese and American lenses. Millions of lives either taken outright or traumatized forever. And the aftermath of Agent Orange, man-made Monsanto monster that lives on for generations. Crazy. Glad to get back safe, return to a wondrous electrical storm - feel fortunate.
