When Betty told Ryan and I that for the big family dinner on Sunday we would be eating haggis, you can imagine the fear that crept through my entire body. For a while I thought she must be joking and she was just telling me this to scare the vegetarian inside me...but no. I did not even know that vegetarian haggis existed let alone tasted so good! The vegetarian version of the classic Scottish dish is mainly just a compact ball of oats, lentils and spices and I am going to try my hardest to find some of it when I return to Canada.
So, that was Sunday dinner at Betty's but let me backtrack a bit. Ryan and I had quite the busy weekend in Edinburgh. Saturday afternoon Ryan, Ernie, Betty and I did some family visiting and history education. Betty took us to the place where Ryan's grandpa Allen grew up and then to the cemetary where his great-grandpa, great-grandma and grandpa's sister were burried. Saturday night Scott, Ryan's cousin, took us to a comedy club. The comedian's were hilarious and the fact that one of them was Canadian made it even better. The best part of the night was definitely when Ryan won a bottle of champagne during the show's intermission.
The next morning instead of taking it easy, Ryan and I head into the city centre to meet up with David for a pub-crawl. We began by visiting a bar/club called Dropkick Murphy's which unfortunately was not open at 12:00 in the afternoon. We spent the rest of the day visiting 4 more bars of David's choosing for a few pints and a nip of Jura to cap off the day. When we returned to Betty's, that's when the family and haggis were waiting for us.
Monday Ryan and I finally took a day just to relax. It is hard to believe that we have already been here for a week...can't wait to see what happens next!
