Our first week flew by, and we really felt very quickly like part of the zoo family and took to our new job easier than we could have imagined! We got to know the animals and all their crazy little characteristics. The turkeys had a strange ability to know when it was time to go in and out of their aviary, the ducks would follow us half way around the zoo until they were fed their bread and the greedy emus would stick their necks so far out of their enclosure they nearly pecked our hands off! The deer and kangaroos would bounce and skip over to us every morning when we were feeding the emus and larger deer and steal all their food straight from our hands and dip their heads in to our food buckets! The wallabies at first couldn't be further away from us but edged closer and closer eventually eating carrot from our hands, Deli our favourite smiley Llama was completely spoilt by us with carrots every day, watching her chew on one side of her mouth never got old. Angel was the friendliest dingo ever and would jump up on us when Day went to get her out on a lead for the visitors, and the monkeys would try to intimidate us and snatch food from our hands! We totally fell in love with all the animals, especially our favourite dog that guarded the chickens, Honey. The only problem was that instead of guarding them, she wanted to play with them which involved charging at and chucking them up in the air. Dave was less than impressed, and after every little Honey incident would threaten to "whack" her. After each threat I was more and more convinced that we were going to adopt Honey and take her with us! She was the most beautiful dog, an Italian sheepdog and was huge, with the kindest eyes, they wouldn't actually hurt her but she was just so mischievous and naughty, I doubt she could ever be properly trained! Even with all the exotic animals around us at the zoo, she was still our firm favourite. We loved our new job as zoo keepers!
