Our Year of Adventure
The owners of Dolphin Bay Hideaway wanted to go to Playa Bluff for Argentinian BBQ for their 'day off' and all of their guests were invited to join them. We were having to check out and were going to Bluff anyway so it suited us perfectly. The Dutch and German couple from Hideaway joined and we were picking up a Catalan couple from a neighbouring island on the way.
There was a a bit of confusion about the time for the Catalan's to be waiting on the dock and they were just finishing breakfast. Erika's husband, Jose, made the executive decision to take us 500m round the coast of the island to another dock and order beers. Local knowledge is a wonderful thing...there was no bar as such for the public, it was just a plain old dock. Jose merely shouted into the depths of jungle beyond and a handful of cold beers were brought out a short time later.
Beers drunk and the Catalan's safely on board, we were soon motoring across the relatively flat water to Bocas town. We changed to a minivan in Bocas town for the drive up the coast to Playa Bluff beach. We shouldn't have been surprised, but we were, that the road soon changed from sealed road to dirt road. The bigger surprise was when the dirt road ran out and we were driving on the beach although that was just temporary.
We were checking in at Tesoro Escondido, which was on the way. The Dutch couple checked out the place too because they might come and join us tomorrow. We originally planned to take a small, bright room with jungle views until the owner offered us a deal on the 'Dolphin' cabin. It is a huge room with a small kitchen and has a large terrace over the sea, the view is awesome though the pounding of waves might make it hard to sleep.
The Beach Bar for the BBQ and drinks was only a short distance further up the beach. It was very chilled out with chairs and hammocks right on the beach. They made an excellent spicy Bloody Mary which had more than a 'good' measure of vodka in it. The chef was Argentinean and he ensured that only the best beef, chicken and sausage made it onto his enormous wood charcoal BBQ grill.
The beach was not suitable for swimming but today there was an unusually big swell with high dangerous waves breaking on the shore and rips. Erika and Jose's kids were keen to get in the water so we moved to a Lodge on the other side of the road which had a pool. The kids could swim in safety while the adults continued with beer and coffee.
We decided to walk back to Tesoro Escondido and waved the others off in their taxi back to Bocas town. We watched the sea for a bit, waves crashing into the small bay below our terrace, before having our pre-ordered dinner. We were still full from the huge plate we had had at lunchtime, but ate as much as we could.
We were due to go on a Turtle Nesting Tour in the evening but it was canceled because the sea was too high. It's being moved to tomorrow so fingers crossed the sea calms down a bit.
