Our Year of Adventure
Maria got sick over the night, most probably due food poisoning from last night's dinner - she had beef and David had pork. We were moving to Dolphin Bay Hideaway on Isla San Cristóbal which meant we needed a boat trip. We were due to be picked up from El Pirata restaurant's dock at 1pm. David ate an 'ejecutivo' lunch which was actually the same as last night's dinner but the meat choice was baked chicken. Maria not only skipped lunch, but had to lay down on the dock just to try not feel sick.
We were joined by another couple, Daniel and Marina from the Netherlands, for the boat ride through the bay and round the mangrove islands. At one point we went through a really narrow bit and we're still unsure if it was a overgrown gap between islands or a 'corridor' that was hacked out as a shortcut.
The dock at Dolphin Bay Hideaway had a shelter with hammocks and lounge chairs. Behind it was the the path round lily ponds and up through a lush tropical garden to the house. We had a room downstairs, the smallest in the house but big enough for us. It also had a huge modern bathroom which has been quite rare on our travels but that's probably more to do with our budget & choices.
We had drinks on the deck, talking with the owner Erika. She was very keen to show us a Red Eyed Tree Frog that she had found. It was incredible - bright green body, orange feet, blue on the inside of it's legs and, of course, red eyes. Maria spent the remainder of the afternoon napping in the hammock while David was writing the blog (it's quite a lot behind, I know!!).
Dinner, breakfast, soft drinks, and up to 3 beer or wine a day are included in the very reasonable (we were lucky to get a last minute walk in deal) package so it actually makes it one of the cheaper decent places to stay in Bocas. The meals are served family style, at one big table, with the other guests which is great for getting to know people. Tonight's meal was a whole fish served up with rice, tasty lentils and salad. It wasn't because it was the third, almost identical, meal for David that was suppressing his appetite, he was beginning to feel sick and eventually had to excuse himself from the table.
Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their fish and washed it down with a few glasses of white wine. Maria continued chatting with Daniel & Marina whilst watching a near full moon and fire flies flitting around.
