Our Year of Adventure
It's a bit like 'Groundhog Day' here, we did exactly the same yesterday as we did today. No bad thing though because it's been so relaxing and we're still 'waking up' from the leisurely pace of life in Roatán. If we're talking about the time between 'waking' and 'getting up', that's maybe 3 hours due to the rooster next door - not as bad as Niuean roosters but they're at it half an hour before the 5am sunrise.
Breakfast was served by the lakeside - coffee, juice and a plate overflowing with fruit, eggs, rice and beans. A bit of exercise was called for after what we'd eaten, so we took a walk round the lake for a couple of hours. Anti-clockwise yesterday and clockwise today.
Reserva Natural Laguna de Apoyo is a crater lake with dry tropical rainforest along the surrounding slopes. There is a huge amount of wildlife including howler monkeys (didn't see or hear any though), squirrels, bats, heaps of birds, giant frogs and lizards to name a few. The real attraction though is the pristine water of the lake, a massive mineral infused pool , considered by many to be the best swim in Nicaragua.
With temperatures around 35c and little wind, a couple of hours walking, even at a slow pace, gets you pretty hot and sweaty. Thankfully, the lake provides respite even though it's a warm 30c. The hotel has tubes for lazing on and without a chance of getting cold, it was easy to lose an hour just bobbing gently on the small ripples. Just in case we turned into prunes in the water, we decided to have a beer in a hammock for an hour before heading back into the water again.
Dinner was under the starlit sky both nights with some fantastic food - Nicarguan goats cheese on homemade toasted bread with salad last night. This evening, Maria went healthy with the homemade vegetable quiche and salad while David went with the hunger busting Chorizo Argentino with fries and just a little salad on the side.
