Our Year of Adventure
Despite all the coffee we drank yesterday, David reckons 7 cups plus the coffee cake, we managed to sleep fine. Breakfast was, again, delicious and set us up nicely for our trip to the Hot Springs.
There were a couple of places close to Manizales and we decided on the closer and the cheaper of the two. We took the public bus, only 1650COP each, for the 30 minute ride to the Tierra Viva hot springs. The road took us out of Manizales and down towards the valley on a steep and windy road. Drivers like to go at breakneck speed so it's more like a fairground ride where you have to hold on with both hands to stop yourself being thrown from your seat.
The hot springs were deserted when we arrived, only one man doing some maintenance work. There was steam coming off the surface of the pools, so the pools were obviously hot and we figured it was fine to have the place to ourselves. The pools themselves were made to look a bit more natural than just a plain pool and with some nice flowers around the surrounding ground, it was basic but a pleasant enough place to spend a few hours. We paid our fee and tentatively entered the pool - the first pool was mayby 35c but the high air temperature made it feel colder. Maybe it's because we are used to New Zealand hot springs where there is always a big difference between air and water temperature we felt it initially cold. It was a a nice temperature though, not so hot that you needed to get out frequently, we could wallow in the water for ages. The second pool was a bit warmer and we stayed until our finger tips looked like prunes.
In the evening, we went out to the mall in search of El Corral - a Colombian Hamburger chain that had been highly recommended. We went through two malls and both were packed but not with shoppers. Hundreds of people had descended on to the malls to watch the second World Cup semi-final on the big screens. In the first mall, three sides of three storeys were packed with onlookers and that didn't even include those on the designated seating on the ground floor.
El Corral burgers are amazing!! They had patties in quarter, half and three quarter pound sizes properly grilled and not thrown on a hot plate, the taste was clearly better. With a side of yuca (fried served with creme cheese and BBQ sauce) and washed down with beer (yes, they sold beer too) it was simply delicious.
