Our Year of Adventure
The refugio in Chileno, despite having more beds per dorm, was much quieter than last night. Even David managed to sleep through the entire night and not snore. The sleeping bags that were on the beds were really warm and even the slight cold from the room couldn't penetrate them so we slept really well compared to the previous night. We were scheduled for the second sitting of breakfast again, but we did manage to eat earlier than the assigned 8:30am slot. It seems that a few people had got up early to walk up the Torre Mirador for sunrise even though we could see, from the dorm window, it was a bit cloudy up there.
We set off back down hill that we had walked up yesterday. There was less cloud and less wind compared to yesterday, but the views at the beginning of the track were not much better. It wasn't until we took the turn off for the alternative path to Los Cuernos Refugio that the scenery started to improve. The weather improved too and it wasn't long before we were walking in shorts (or leggings in Maria's case). It was a relatively flat path that was very pretty, full of flowers and bushes with berries. There were even Andean Condors flying around above our heads getting lifted in currents swirling around the mountains to our right. There was high, wispy, white clouds scattered across the brilliant blue sky, which made the scenery all the more striking. We had amazing views of Monte Almirante Norte and Cuernos del Paine as we walked along the side of Lago Nordernsjöld. The cuernos notable formation is composed of contrasting igneous sedimentary and etamorphic rocks which are unique in the world.
It was a short walk today, just over 4 hours, so we were soon at Los Cuernos Refugio checking in. We were initially given a small cramped room with no locker, but David arranged a move to better dorm with a locker. The dorm did have 3x3 beds for 9 pax and we had the American guy who snored badly in Torres Central in the room. He was assigned a bed on the 3rd level and asked for a move and ended up in the cramped room we originally had.
We relaxed for the rest of the afternoon, taking a walk down to the lakeside beach, chatting with the other trampers and sipping on our 'welcome' Pisco Sours. There were beautiful views of the Cuernos and Glacier Francés from the deck of the refugio - it must be the most scenic place to stay on the W Circuit.
We managed to get an early dinner at 7pm which was interesting. The vegetable soup for starters was straightforward, but the 'Meat Pie with Pasta and Pink Sauce' was more interesting and wasn't eaten by the more fussy eaters. The meat pie was a bit like a meatloaf, but it had a layer of hot dog sausages through the middle of it. The pasta was normal but it was anyone's guess what the pink sauce was.
