A nice easy flight was just what we needed for our stop in Singapore was due to be a short but sweet visit. Luckily, the flight was perfect and after finding the hotel, we set off to make the most of the 30 something hours we had before our flight to Darwin. The hostel, Sleepy Sams, was our first and last stop in a dorm rather than a private room, it was very nice with air con, nice decor...and hundreds and hundreds of beds! Jo, however, would change the name to Smelly Sams on account of the fact that you must take your shoes off to go up to the dorms and there is a rather strong aroma of a good cheddar. A quick walk to the nearby park in the sweltering heat and we found the river, the main focal point of the town, the financial district and the place to go for seafood restaurants. We walked the river banks for an hour or so and after trying out the exercise machines and working up a sweat we stumbled upon an open air concert. The lead singer, a very nervous young lady who introduced herself after every song, played a lot of western favourites and we stopped and listened until dinner was calling. The seafood restaurants on the promenade were lined up like on the Algarve and after being persuaded into a nice looking crab-house we sat down for what was looking to be a very promising crab curry. "$4 a kilo" was the quote for crab so we agreed to view the potential candidates and selected a prime specimen. However, the little blighter got off lucky when, on clarifying the price, we were told it was actually $40 a kilo! So we opted for something else which was just as good but not quite as dear...
The next day we took a trip over to Sentosa Island. This was like a theme park but much sandier and more relaxing. The cable car over to the Island gave us splendid views but we topped this by the 'Carlsberg Tower' (Probably The Best Views Over Singapore...). The man made beach was absolutely gorgeous but you couldn't help thinking it had been manufactured to look perfect..because it had. The beach experience was topped off with some lunch over looking the bay and an ice cream (of course!) before we headed reluctantly back to our hostel to get our bags and head off for our flight. Next stop: Darwin, Australia.
