David and Julie Browning's Travels
We left Sorrento to head along the Amalfi coast to a small town on the east coast, Termoli.
We've heard so much about the Amalfi coast we just had to do the drive
to experience it ourselves. Wrong decision. Don't get us wrong, the
drive is spectacular. However, it is also quite nerve wracking (hence
the lack of photographs). The road is narrow and winding, with a
towering cliff on one side, and a sheer drop to the ocean on the other,
with only a low retaining wall preventing you from plunging a few
hundred feet to oblivion. And the traffic. We spent half the trip
pulling over to let other vehicles pass by. And the other half
negotiating blind corners, narrow bridges, and crowded villages. Not the
most pleasant of drives. Julie spent the bulk of the trip with her eyes
closed.
Once we were past Salerno, we managed to get onto the Autostrade. Happy days. Small glitch - we went through the wrong toll booth, so we didn't get a ticket, which you need to exit the
autostrade at the other end. So, at the other end. No ticket. No English
speaking attendants. Guess what - we get hit with a 80euro ($100) fine
for no ticket. Great. Any way, we continued on to our next destination,
Termoli.
Termoli proved to be a charming small town. Primarily a fishing port, it is now a popular holiday destination for Italian families. The hotel we stayed at is just perfect. Well located
in the town area, just outside the old city. The owner even assisted us
in getting our autostrade fine waived.
Tomorrow we are heading north to Florence for a few days. Looking forward to
spending a few days in the cultural centre of Italy.
