David and Julie Browning's Travels
17/12/2011: Belgium. Crossed the border
about 10am. I swear the temperature dropped by 2-3 degrees as we did.
Stopped for a coffee at a truck stop - nearly froze getting back to the
car. Closer to Brussels, we noticed a light covering of snow on the
fields. No wonder it feels colder here!!. It wasn't our intention to go
to Brussels (big city and all that). But we came across a great hotel
deal on the net - 4 1/2 star hotel offering rooms with breakfast for
only 64 euro per night. So, Brussels
it is, seat of the European Union, home to NATO & the European
Parliament. We have two nights here, so hopefully we'll get to see what
it has to offer (if it doesn't snow that is).
18/12/2011: Doing a Google search you soon realize that there is quite a lot to
see and do in Brussels. But, seeing as how we only have today to look
around we picked something we both thought would be worth seeing - the Atomium
.It is a structure which is part sculpture, part building, part museum,
part tourist attraction. It was built as the centrepiece for the Brussels World Fair in 1958.
And wouldn't you know it - stepped outside the hotel and it was
snowing. So scarf and beanie weather today. The site wasn't too
difficult to get to, and surprise surprise, parking was easy (almost
unheard of in Europe). The Atomium structure is quite impressive. The
silvery metal balls glisten in the sunshine (it has stopped snowing by
now), joined together by what appears from a distance to be slender
rods. A testament to the vision of architects and builders of what the
future could hold.
As we were standing on the upper observation deck, we were looking out over Brussels when it began snowing again. Not a light fall this time, but thick swirling clouds of
snow which soon blotted out the view. And there, far below us, we could
see hundreds of people lining up to start a fun run. A FUN RUN??? In THIS weather??? Must be mad!!!
By the time we had finished looking around (2-3 hours), the snow was gone, and the city was
bathed in brilliant sunshine. Still freezing cold, but doesn't seem as bad if the sun is out.
