I have to say im pleasantly surprised with Edinburgh. The buildings are all big and old and touch side to side. With the castle looming over the city and sitting high on a hill the whole place just feels exciting. We weaved our way thru the city with our local tour guide pointing out all the sights until we arrived at the Castle gates where our guide gave us the quick once over and we were then free for an hour to wander around by ourselves. What an amazing castles with incredible views. Viewing the Scottish Crown jewels was an added bonus. The paths that wound thru the castle were old and rugged and you wondered how many people had walked the same route over the years. I loved the dungeons and all the walkways under the castle and i really felt like i was living inside a movie set.
Whilst the castle was great, my highlight for the day was the visit to Rosslyn Chapel. This chapel was of course made famous from the Da Vinci Code book. Its even more intriguing in real life. The history and the extraordinary carvings left you wanting to know more and craving to find out what really went on before us. One of the fascinating things was some carvings up one of the pillars featuring some Corn heads, of which are very rare and only grown in North American. These carvings were done 30 years before Columbus officially was the first person to explore and find these corns. There are stories that the Knights of Templar had actually travelled to North America before Columbus,,, so perhaps these stories are actually true.
Many of the carvings are bizzare, with skeletons fighting with swords, and upside down angels with snake like ropes around them, signifying the fallen angels. There are Green men on most pillars, sinister looking people. We went down into the vault below the church (just like on the movie - cause it was actually filmed there) and there are numerous cyrpts down there. Its rumoured that the knights of Templar are buried below the church. The crypts have not been opened so this could well be the case. there are stories also that the heart of William the Bruce maybe there, along with the Holy Chalice....... and perhaps Mary Magdalene. Whatever the truth is, you get a strong feeling that this chapel definetely holds some secrets. Its in the middle of no where, located around 10 miles out of Edinburgh. Definetely worth a visit. Its one place that i just had to buy the book on :)) need to find out more about this place. I loved it!
Now we are putting our going out clothes on, as we are heading out for a Scottish Night.... 3 course meal and all drinks included ..... oh dear... we have an early start tommorrow as well eeek
