More sunshine and shorts today. We'd had enough of spending too much time in the hire car (the Kia's got no Soul despite its name, although it does have Satellite Radio, as had the previous hire car, and we can get soul on that) so we headed off to a relatively nearby bit of coast near Falmouth on the south-east end of Cape Cod. The information about walking and trails on Cape Cod is a bit limited but we were delighted with our discovery of Quissett Harbor and the Knob. The k*** is a tiny little promontory at the end of a sand spit that has been protected from destruction by winds and waves by the construction of a boulder "armor" that numerous signs ask you to not disturb. It's a bit of a shame that there were not more signs giving information about the flora and fauna. Thanks to a fellow visitor we could identify a new tree simply as the 'mitten tree' - the leaves are shaped like mittens. But thanks to the wonders of Google we can tell you it was a Sassafras tree.
We also had a great view of an Osprey fishing in the harbour and we have some good photos of it. The best photos are of it in a treetop but Dave did capture it as it took off from the water with a fish in its talons. Dave also took that classic 'nearly amazing' photo of it flying off from the tree top. The bird is in focus - but sadly only the tail is in the shot - oh well, that's wildlife photography for you!
The afternoon was so warm and sunny that we spent a while sitting in the sunshine on the sandy beach before heading off round the other side of the sand bar to look at the pretty little harbour and the yachts moored there. In particular there were a number of what we assume must be a local yacht, and the trail leaflet tells us are "Herreshoff 12½-footers". These are elegant little yachts that made a pleasing scene on this sunny afternoon. No doubt they are owned by the residents of the large posh houses that are dotted along the many private lanes around the bay.
Then a short drive to photograph the day's lighthouse at Nobska Point, and on for a short stroll at Surf Drive Beach. It was though time for an ice cream but as we've yet to see any commercialisation of the seashore we had to head inland to the nearest town. This is a good thing really but not when what you'd just like to do is sit on the beach licking an ice cream! We stopped at the town's post office to buy more stamps for postcards home and spotted that there was an ice cream shop less than hundred yards up the road. We're embarrassed to say that we lived the American way and drove to Tina's ice cream parlour: it had to be done! The ice cream at "Tina's" was good. Jill stuck to her USA favourite of Black Raspberry but Dave tried the Grapenut Custard and Totally Turtle, the latter being the flavour winner of the day - a vanilla ice cream with caramel, cashew nuts and brownie pieces.
Back at base Jill caught up with an episode of "The Great British Bake Off". This is quite a challenge as BBC iPlayer doesn't work outside of the UK but there are kind people who post it on YouTube. You don't necessarily get to watch the episodes in the right order and the picture quality can be poor but it's tolerable and a good way to relax with a cup of tea before cooking tea. Dave meanwhile was busy writing blog entries and editing his photos, making a selection for posting on the blog.

Jill By the way the k*** is not us being coy about the name of the place we visited today but Off Exploring deciding that it needs to be written that way...... we think makes it look worse that just writing the name!
