Well the heat has certainly been cranked up since arriving in Cambodia - and what a journey it was. I have now covered over 3500 Km overland and too may modes of transport to count - train, bus (mini, sleeper, local), motorbike, pushbike, boat (various types), tuk tuk, blah blah.......
Anyway, to Cambodia i decided to take a tour on the Mekokg Delta and get the boat over the border instead of the 6 hour bus ride. It was an early start and i felt rough as, my stupid fault, instead of getting a decent nights sleep i went out with Mike (Brazil) and Alex (Jack), simple equation - buckets of beer + long Island tea's + 3 hours sleep = bad hangover.
Maybe it was the beer googles, not sure, but there was hardly any British on the tour it looked liked it was carrying extras from a film set - namely prisoner cell block h & star wars - not a pleasant sight. Anyway, a bizarre tour it was, the first day was ok, boat trip, bike ride (excellent fish lunch) but there was still 5 hours stuck on a bus!. Overnight i stopped in a floating hotel (again trades description act should step in), it wasn't floating but it was right in the Mekong. The restaurant was fantastic, on the second floor of the hotel/boat? overlooking the Mekong and the night was warm with a gentle breeze. Food was cheap and reallly good, had a great chat & laugh with Lyndsey (Scotland) & Mark (Chicago) and 3 bottles of red wine? (will i ever learn!). The next day and onto Cambodia, this is the crappy bit, we went to a fish farm and small village (yawn) and then it was a 4 hour boat journey (half hour break at the border to sort out visas), then onto a coach for another 2 hours to Phnon Penh. All in all a very long trip, mind you it was a cheap tour and i had to get over the border anyway so nothing lost - i would recommend just getting the bus because the tour was comical, so disorganised but actually that in a way made it fun and we all had a good craic about it. On the trip i also met Alan & Clarie (Ireland) and got some great tips for Chiang Mia.
In Phnom Penh, i took a look at riverside accomadation, it was expensive and not much going so i got a tuk tuk with Mark, Alan & Claire and we headed lakeside. It turned out to be the best move, again it's pretty tight for rooms and we looked at some real crap stuff, not just basic but shabby, dirty and a real hum!. Lonely planet is pretty much smack on. Eventually we each found a room, at $5 a night it's real basic, no hot water & just a bed but at Happy guest house it's clean and smells alright - would recommend it. The best bit of this place is the bar area, overlooking the lake, great little chill out areas, hammocks, big TV for the footy and bottles of beer for a $1 - sorted. The 4 of us went for a bite to eat and thought we deserved a bucket of vodka red bull followed by lots of beer whilst watching two games of Sunday afternoon footy - life doesn't get any better.
That pretty much wraps up day 1 in Cambodia, pretty much where i left off Vietnam - happy as larry !?
