Leaving Bocas early in the morning we headed across the continental divide. Within 3 hours of leaving the Caribbean coast we came over the top of the mountains and the Pacific Ocean was in view. The landmass being so narrow here that at the highest peak you can see both oceans.
In 1513 a Spanish explorer called Vasco Nuñez de Balboa took advice from Panamian natives that a vast ocean existed over the mountains. So he took off on foot into the unknown, climbing over the mountains to reach the top 24 days later.
From there he saw the unbelievable site of a massive ocean, completely unknown to the old world. He then decended, eventually reaching the coast, he walked in the sea, raised his sword and claimed possession of the entire ocean and all lands that touch it for Spain (sounds rather greedy to us)
We followed a similar harsh expedition from the Caribbean over the mountains to view the Pacific, we had to endure a hot and crowded shuttle bus and a very talkative local who kept saying he will fly back to England with Emily, leaving Dave behind (at that point Dave raised his baguette and claimed possession of all of Emily for Dave)
So where were we heading on this journey you ask?
Well our ultimate destination is Panama City and direct buses (albeit long ones) go straight from Bocas but we had to make a stop over in a place purely down to its name.
Yep, Its the town of David !
Apart from the amusing situation of David travelling thousands of miles to get to David, there isnt really much more to talk about. Its a fairly normal working town with a heavy influence of American attitudes to footpaths (Ie. there are none) We did however stay in a great hostal called ´Purple House´ which was unbelievably purple!
Purple walls, seats, beds, clothes, fans, curtains- You name it and its purple. They have even gone so far as to have framed pictures of the movie ´The Color Purple´ and Princes ´Purple Rain´ record hanging on the wall.....and a dog called 'Cute-si' who they have dyed purple (that last bit is made up, but the dog did have a purple collar)
We guess they really do like Purple in David
So here we are, David his happy to be in David. Emily is now looking though the South American guide book to find a place called Emily....
