So off we head off from the sleepy (ex-pat) town of Corozal to what is hopefully a more inspiring town of Orange Walk.
The name brings up images of nice tree lined streets, pleasent buildings and a relaxed air....but no.
Orange Walk was abit of a culture shock, not helped by our accommodation for the next two nights which resembled a prison block (see photo, and yes, it is actually worst inside than it looks outside!)
We had a small cell, probably 2x4m with barred windows onto a very loud busy street, with two single beds and a short walk down the corridor to the shared toliet. Which never had any toliet paper, and normally had lots of stuff on the floor that is suppose to be in the toliet!
Anyway the next day we went to our arranged river, jungle tour which was amazing - and the main reason why we came here (see the next post)
The town had only one restaurant of note (which was abit out of the town and on a riverside - was actually very nice indeed) the rest of the town was a load of run down buildings, crumbling roads and not much going on apart from locals getting very drunk and shouting at us as we walked past them.
Kinda feel sad for the residents as they really have nothing to do, our hotel owner just spends all his time on the internet with his 'internet friends' as there is nothing going on.....although on the first night him and his family got us drunk on rum and coke, so not all bad.
Just to give you more of an idea what this place is like, one day when we were siting in the hotel lobby, a pick up truck crashed straight into another car. The guy in the pick-up truck got out and was holding a bottle of beer! When the police turned up they appeared to not see a problem with this at all.....amazing.
So that was Orange Walk, not that nice but an experience which we will never forget!
