This is the enormous, mile-wide, Martha Pit at the Waihi gold mine, within a stone's throw of the main street. First opened as a mine in 1878, by 1952 174,160kg of gold and 1,193,180kg of silver had been extracted. This open-cast pit opened in 1978.
