The Nissan X-Trail we hired easily coped with the steep, twisting roads over the Snowy Mountains. In 2001 there were raging bush fires in this area, similar to the ones that have recently occured north-west of Melbourne. Thousands of acres were devastated but gradually the bush is returning, though some areas still look like the denuded trees of the Somme.
