Left Salamanca and travelled to Caceres.(200km). Found a great campsite each pitch had its own brick built shower.toilet, sink room. Well worth stopping there.Caught the but to the town of caceres, Spent 3 nights here at Camping Caceres. Then travelled down on the friday to Bacoco, to our next helpx.
we strolled around the historical quarters at our leisure to admire the numerous buildings, towers, palaces and plazas most very well conserved or recently restored, dating from the Middle Ages and Rennaisance. We were able to see remnants from Medieval times, Roman occupation, Moor occupation and Jewish influence. Caceres has four main areas to be explored; the historical quarter, the Jewish quarter, the modern center, and the outskirts. the most exciting thing for Dave was the menu, he wanted to try the pigs cars, or the fish of roman.
Bacoco Spain
this is our 2nd helpx. Bacoco is situated on the Spanish/Portugeese border. We have been to Portugal several times and it;s strange because its one hour behind.
Estramoz Market in Portugal
Estremoz market, AlentejoAt this Saturday market old ladies sell whatever is fresh in their vegetable garden and on their fruit trees, and their husbands sell their olive oil, olives and honey. there was plenty of live animals for sail. pigeons in wickers baskets, rabbits, guinea pigs. all sorts of live fowl.
we did the local walk up the mountain behind the place were staying at. to see the old dereltict lighthouse.crossing over into portugal several times. we didnt bother to change the watch in the end. lol.
Marveo portugal
The splendid site and 360-degree panorama alone would be reason enough to visit the medieval mountaintop village of Marvão, but the town itself (a candidate for the World Heritage list), is one of Portugal's most spectacular fortified villages.
The greatest attraction is the unspoiled medieval atmosphere in its steep and narrow lanes with immaculately whitewashed houses, leading to a magnificent 13th century castle rising from the rock. It contains a huge water cistern and nearby is a 13th century church with a small but interesting museum of archeological finds and local artifacts.
we visited this place, well worth the visit, it was free !!!
Fantastic views from the verhandah cafe. 2 x coffee was 2.20 euros. the cheapest so far. Dave got chased out of a dungeon by sleeping gnats.
on the way back we got lost in a small town, going around and around the streets. being followed behind by the locals. finally one stopped, and we said la codesera, he very kindly drove all through the town and led us out. at which time we stopped to say thanks, he got out of his car, and we thought somethings a miss here, the man was leaning up against his car while opening the other door, and getting out his crutches, we then realised he only had one leg. the outbacks of spain have locals just like at home.
La codesera
This is the local town with lots of bars and the supermarket. this is where we have found the internet. at the library. Have been introduced to a couple who live just over the border in to Portugal, so we are going there for a few days.
the local diet seems to consist of cheap red wine, and slices of cured pig fat, plus hairs. A bit like an uncooked pork scratching but thicker. or you can have fried pigs ears.
Theres plenty of small creatures about, tree frogs, geckos, lizards. I have been very lucky and spotted a griffon vulture, and a whoopie bird.
this area of Spain the Extramadura is well worth a visit.
