Los Angeles comes as a breath of fresh air after Vegas. Which is odd, given the yellow smog layer visible over much of the city from the Hollywood Hills. However it's generally pretty clean, the plants are real (all grass in Vegas seemed to be of the kind you get on a grocer's Market stall) and the tourists are not gibbering, whooping, money frittering baboons. Las Vegas has been a bit of a shock to the system. I've gone from desolate desert, small town America into the gaudiest place imaginable. On my way in I stopped off at the Hoover Dam, a fairly massive slab of concrete wedged into the Colorado River gorge. It's a little surreal to think that it's a tourist attraction, festooned as it is with high-voltage power cables, but there is a nice art-deco quality to the architecture. Day three of my rock odyssey and it's a day to concentrate on some locations with an amazing lack of rock. I'd noticed a site on the map called Meteor Crater, and a little investigation revealed that there was a meteor crater there. Only 35 miles away, it made for a quick pre-lunch diversion. The crater itself is about 2.4 miles in circumference, which makes it about .75 miles across... Can someone do the Math for me? It's a sizeable hole in the ground. Next up...

Not a lot to say really... Woke, drove, rocks, drove, rocks, drove, desert, rocks, drove, drove, drove, stopped. I added and subtracted some state parks, giving Canyonlands only a view from a distance and heading for the Natural Bridges park instead.
