Hey everyone sorry its been so long for a wee update on what we've been up to not had much of a chance to use the net.
been in africa for little over a month now and done loads so got loads to tell.
first leg of our trip was great, we had awesome group and great staff too, our first day we did a game drive in kruger park in johanesburg. it was excellent, we seen 3 out of the big five, elephant, rhino and buffalo and loads of jiraffes, zebra, warthogs, antelope, hippos and ones i cant remember the names of but were still beautiful to see. we saw a massive herd of elephants at the end of the game drive, we counted about 25 and they blocked our way out so got lots of videos of them.
There was a big posh group of tourists staying the same night and we gate crashed their party so we could watch all the local dancing. that was great, the girls sang along with a couple of drums and the boys, all dressed in furs and native clothing danced wee tribal dances - one was about a hangover haha!
on the drive to zimbabwe we did a few more sight seeing things and me and darren were fighting over what was more beautiful, scotland or africa, i was for scotland so i obviously won hehe!
on the truck we work on rota basis so we all chip in with the cooking, cleaning and packing so we're still working hard ;-)
Zimbabwe (this is darrens diary entry)
went to great zimbabwe ruins, which is where the old kings and their 200 wifes used to live. the ruins gave zimbabwe its name and it means 'great stone houses'. we had a cool guide called champion, who spoke like bill cosby in an african accent.
after the ruins we were supposed to leave to go to gweru but our truck broke down so we had to camp there for a night and got steaming.
headed to gweru next morning and went to the lion feeding, where they dont feed them for 5 days and put a big carcus in their cage for them go at. Claire was at the fence annoying it while it was eating and it charged at the fence at her, she shat herself and fell back lol!
played the zimbabwean guides at footbal, their undefeated but we drew 1-1 so not bad. made a good investment changed $1 for one million trillion zimbabwe dollars (one note).
on to the next campsite we went to a rhino park and went on a wee trecking mission to find the white and black rhinos. after following their footprints and jobbies we found 2 white rhinos, we got really close but then we thought they were going to charge at us so we were told to stand totally still and be quiet. it took them about 15 minutes to finally leave us alone and by that point we all nearly died of fear anyway. their was this massive dog at the campsite and it headbutted darren trying to lick him haha!
Victoria falls was next on the cards and darren booked a bunji jump off the bridge, it looked too scary so i decided not to join in. after we watched darren do his jump a group of us went into check out the waterfalls. they were massive and when we were standing on the side we got soaked with the spray. there were some crazy folk on the other side standing at the very top, they looked like they were going to fall in which im sure some people have done in the past.
zambia
after changing groups from our first leg we went to zambia. nothing much to say from there because we literally drove for 3 days solid through it and didnt see anything except from our campsite.
malawi
we did a scuba dive in lake malawi with another couple from our group and that was cool. there wasnt much in the way of coral so the guys who run it have actually towed an old jeep out to the island so there is something funny for people to see. there were some really cool looking fish and it was different doing it in fresh water rather than the ocean.
we went into the village to see one of their local school events they have once a year. it was so cute, all the kids were dancing, but totally different to back home they were all shaking their booties and couldnt have been older that 9 lol!
we were taken to one of the teachers houses for a soft drink as a thank you for attending it is a really big gesture on their part so that was dead nice.
Waiting for the truck to come we taught the kids some songs and dances from back home and it was so funny listening to them repeat our scottish accent. when we eventually got on the back of the pick up im not over exagerating when i say there was about 30 of us squeeshed on there included about 3 mothers breastfeeding in the middle, was good taste of local culture.
we had a dress up party one night and dont ask me how i managed it, but i convinced darren to wear skintight leopard print trousers and a crop top, just look at the photos i dont need to tell you how funny it was ;-)
tanzania
had a really cool campsite in dar es salam and after getting back from zanzibar we just had a couple of days on the beach after leaving rest of group there.
kenya
we just got into nairobi last night and thank god. as much as we have had some nice times over the past 2weeks our group has been rubbish and so have the staff. everyone is all negative and aggressive and so we've just been counting the days till we get to move groups and its finally here WOO HOO, so fingers crossed next couple of weeks are more like the first few.
tommorow we'll meet new group and head to another park for a game drive so hopefully see some lions and leopards this time.
