San Gimignano, Italy
I keep on going to places that top my expectations. San Gimignano was, in the 13th century, the Manhattan of medieval times, with 72 family towers being built, with one family trying to out do the other. A plague in 1300 reduced the city from 13,000 to 4000. The town never recovered. 14 towers remain, along with the original city walls and the two main gates. A little bit like Camelot in Tuscany.
