We arrived in Lucca around 12:50. The scenery on the way there was, once again, lovely. Little villages in the hills, streams, rivers and churches were aplenty. Once at the station we tried to find out how we make our way into the walled, medieval town. Catherine needed to pee quickly and upon returning to me told me that there were no proper toilets, just a hole in the ground. This is a medieval town after all. There was an Asian woman in there with her who was seemingly as surprised by the hole in the ground. They gave each other a look to say "good luck" and entered their respective cubicles. As we left the station we saw a side of the tall wall that surrounds Lucca and we found the way into the town by going under a nice archway! Within minutes of looking up at (enter church name) I'd stepped in dog s***, twice. But this, surprisingly didn't stop me from noting how clean and pretty Lucca was. We walked to the front of the church and stopped to take a picture or two. We wanted to go in but it was closed so we strolled around some more. There wasn't much to do in Lucca from what I could make out or any major monument to look at but it's just a nice, typical little Italian town where shopkeepers brush up outside their store, where you can hear a mother shouting to her kids to tell them it's lunchtime and smell the local bakers breaded delights. It was a nice change of pace. We walked further on and came across The Amphitheatre. It's called that due to it being built to look like the great Amphitheatre's of Rome, at least in shape anyway but instead of battles and events, now it's just restaurants and shops. It (and indeed Lucca) was once shown on an episode of Top Gear in which the 3 "whacky" presenters tried to get whatever flash cars they were driving out of the city. As Lucca is mainly pedestrianised, I can see how they struggled, the cobbled streets lead to many tight, narrow alleys, it's all very picturesque. After this, we found the Guinigo Torre, a tower that gives you a great view over the town. Catherine, understandably didn't fancy the 276 stair climb but I made my way up there and it was awesome in more ways than one. 1) the view was great. 2) I was the only one up there and it was so nice and peaceful I could of just sat there and looked out all afternoon. 3) The weather was perfect. Clear skies, warm and with a nice cool breeze. It was a shame to have to come down and head back to Pisa though when we did, we found a nice place to grab a bite to eat, Taglitelle and Spaghetti Carbonara respectively and then when grabbed some Gelato from a bar opposite the Field of Miracles and sat there to eat it while looking up at The leaning Tower. It was the perfect end to our Tuscan holiday and one last late evening goodbye from the local Pizza place didn't hurt either. We packed our bags and were ready for tomorrow.
