Just a short and sweet entry this time because we didn't get up to much in Adelaide - relaxation and partying were top of the agenda.
Whatever Adelaide is, we were not expecting it. We wanted to use it as a respite before we headed off on our outback adventure. However, this place had different plans for us. We are staying in a great hostel in the city centre. What it lacks in facilities it makes up for in sociability, homeliness and fun. It's name - 'My Place' - is quite fitting. The staff are great, as were the residents while we were there.
Adelaide is a diamond in the bush. A small concrete oasis surrounded by greenery. It is the only city that I have been to where the trees far outnumber the buildings. The best way to appreciate it is by visiting the surrounding Adelaide Hills - specifically Windy Point where you can get a panoramic view over the miles of flat, fertile land that seems to dwarf the city itself. We saw this at sunset which was stunning.
We visited the South Australia Museum which was bursting at the seams with aboriginal art and items of cultural significance. It was good to see this before we headed into the outback as it adds some context to the trip. Plus we agreed that we will be getting some aboriginal art for our next home.
The hostel had a nice balcony where the 30-odd residents hang out at night playing guitar, drinking goon (a liquid that is labelled 'wine' but includes fish as an ingredient - it really is rancid stuff!) and generally chatting about travels etc. Sounds like a hippy haven, but it is definitely one of the best places that we have stayed at so far.
We visited the National Wine Centre of Australia and tasted the goods. We also learnt about the processes and science behind the making of different wines.
On our last day we went to Glenelg beach on the tram and did absolutely nothing. It was great.
The reason that we we did so little was because our next stop - Alice Springs - is going to be hectic to say the least.
