Just a quick update on our unexpected stop over in Langkawi and so we get it on the map :)
So our boat from Lipe arrived in Langkawi at 2:30 and we just presumed there would be an afternoon boat to Penang which is where we are off to next, when we got to the ticket office the lady told us the boat was at 2:40 so we wouldnt be able to get on it, she failed to tell us as we discoverd the next day that there was an evening boat at 5pm, but never mind.
So once we realised we had to or thought we had to stop over in Langkawi we hunted down a taxi to take us to the town, the town itself is very much a locals town and very few white tourists, there were a few other asian tourists but we were the only westerners in town! We found a place to stay and then went to see if there was anything to see in this little town, well the answer to that was no, unless you wanted to burn all your cash in the many duty free shops there were about. I ended up googling the duty free situation over here and it turns out the government gave the island a duty free status in 2008 to try and promote tourism, which worked well for us when we got out big bar of toblerone for a £!! taking into account it may just happen to be a very special time of the month for a certain someone, when I was faced with bucket loads of stupidly cheap cadburies, toblerone, milka, kitkat, reeces, just every chocolate you could imagine, AND to top it off I hadnt had a piece of chocolate for weeks!!! I thought we did very well only leaving the shop with one chocolate and not a hundered!!
They had a carpark full of food stalls in the evening so we managed to get a huge dinner and drinks for £5, if the pricing is like this throughout Malaysia we could be in for a good time :) The next day and we had to hunt down a more western style place for breakfast, unless we wanted fish broth and noodles and even though we have been travelling asia for 4 months now we still like our eggs and coffee in the mornings, although I did dream about a bowl fruit and fibre and a mug of tetleys tea with fresh milk last night mmmmm :)
Our boat wasnt until 2:40 and we had to check out the hotel and go to the ferry port at 12 so that gave us ample time to research all the food penang is famous for and make a note of them ready for our gastronomic adventures!
We are aiming to spend about 2 days in each place with a day traveling so its going to be a really fast paced whirlwind tour of 3 of the places we researched that we would most like to go, blogs will be coming out my earholes over the next 10 days!!
