The weather has been relatively kind to us in Scotland. Not exactly clear blue sky, but not much rain either.
Today, we're heading off for what has become known as the "Friockheim Experience". Friockheim, pronounced "free-come", is a small village about 30 minutes away from Dundee. It is the ancestral home of our side of the clan. Lorna and Alison claim to have been scarred for life after enduring school holidays as children in the very quiet and peaceful Friockheim.. We visited the home of our Great Great Grand Father and paid our respects at the local cemetery before moving on to Arbroath. Arbroath is a seaside town dating back to the 1100's. The Declaration of Arbroath, basically The Scottish Declaration of Independence, was signed in Arbroath. Also of note is the Bell Rock Lighthouse. Positioned on a rock outcrop, some 11 miles off the coast, it is the oldest sea washed lighthouse in the world. Reading some anecdotal stories from the past at the Signal House Museum. Apparently, when Arbroath was a fishing village, it was customary for the women to wade out to the fishing boats carrying the men on their backs, this was to ensure the fishermen didn't get their feet wet at the start of the day! I'd like to meet the guy that first suggested the idea! After fish n chips by the sea, we headed back to Dundee and to the "Law". The Law Hill is a granite volcano plug in the heart of Dundee, from which you can survey the entire city.
Dinner at Lorna's again, and we were off to the "Escape Room, Scotland". This was a great giggle with 6 of us put into a locked "Black Pearl" themed room, with an hour to work out how to get out. There are at least 25 locks and puzzles, all with cryptic clues that need to be solved in order to escape. We managed to get out in 54 mins, 36 secs… The best score for newbies on the day!
Friday morning saw us off to the Royal and Ancient, St Andrews with Alison in Bella, her baby blue Fiat 500. St Andrews, known for its university (William and Kate attended), is also considered the home of Golf, with Its scenic coastal vista in the Kingdom of Fife, just across the Tay river from Dundee. The morning was a tad cold and windy as we strolled from the golf course, along to the ruins of St Andrews castle and St Andrews cathedral, once the largest in Scotland.
A gathering of the clan at Lorna and Kevin's made for a lively dinner and games evening with much fun and laughter. Bidding most farewell here, we headed home, as we have to prepare for our departure in the morning.
