On our arrival to Canberra, our first stop was to be the Visitors Information Centre, but to our dismay a floral show was on behind it and the bus parking was blocked off. You know when you get to a point of no return; we had this situation in the car park. A friendly security guy came up to us as we are doing a three point turn at a dead end of the car park, and gave us advise on where to park, and it certainly wasn't anywhere near the Information Centre. So where to next; off to see Parliament House.
As we drove past Lake Burley Griffin the water jet fountain was going off and was a spectacular display with water propelled vertically skyward.
At Parliament House we couldn't find any parking for DABUS, so a drive around it was had, followed by a drive around the Old Parliament House. Mmmmm it's not really a RV friendly town.
Next stop was the Australian War Memorial, finally a section for bus and caravan parking, out the back. On walking around the front of the building what an amazing view, looking down Anzac Avenue towards Parliament House. The Australian War Memorial is Australia's national memorial to the members of its armed forces and supporting organisations who have died or participated in wars involving the Commonwealth of Australia, and some conflicts involving personnel from the Australian colonies prior to Federation.
Once inside we were astounded by the view looking down the Roll of Honour towards the Commemorative Area, the Shrine, including the Hall of Memory with the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier.
We spent hours in the museum before going into the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. Here we were fortunate to enter this shrine and take it all in by ourselves, as there are plenty of school groups here. The leadlight windows and all the walls and ceiling were mosaic and so impressive. The Shrine and walking down the Roll of Honour of all deceased soldiers was very moving.
Alan had discovered a big car swap meet and American Car Show was on at the Queanbeyan Showgrounds, so off we went in search of the dump point there. On arrival to the showgrounds we discovered two other motorhomes there, so Alan being cheeky just backed DABUS in beside the holding yards and here we stayed for the weekend and no one bothered to ask who we were and what we were doing there.
No camping is allowed at the showgrounds to travellers. We enjoyed the swap meet on the Saturday before the rain hit and then Sunday morning enjoyed the car show before heading out of town. We would love to come back to Canberra again and explore more of what our capital has to offer.
