After a couple of hours hanging out in the crappiest part of Pearson's terminal 3, and a lovely chance meeting with Cindy, who was going to exciting Salt Lake City, we boarded our unremarkable flight to LAX. LAX was about as interesting as Pearson, but add on very long lines and excessive crowds to round things out. But then things improved- Air New Zealand's economy sky couch!!! I actually slept solidly for 7 of the 8.5 hour flight and arrived in Rarotonga refreshed and happy to get lei'd!!
We rented a scooter and spent the first day circling the island to get familiarized; it's very small and pretty- 32km full circle. We stopped at a fishing shop for lunch and had some of the freshest tuna I've ever tasted. It was so unfishy that we couldn't even distinguish between chicken and fish. We then went to the night market for dinner and dessert...or actually dessert and dinner to be more accurate. The food here is mostly fantastic, and the only disappointment was when I ordered a "beef patty" for a snack and was promptly presented with a bunless hamburger- live and learn.
This morning, for the first time in longer than I can remember, we were awakened by a call and response number performed by the wild chickens and roosters that seem to be everywhere on the island. We had a leisurely breakfast then spent a few hours snorkeling in Muri Lagoon. I must say, I'm a big fan!! It's shallow and protected with some of the bluest water and colourful fish.
On the whole, the island is pretty, peaceful and plain. It doesn't really seem to have much personality and is filled with a number of older Kiwis. I think this is their answer to snowbirding!
Tomorrow we're off to Aitutaki. I'm very excited for our next snorkel. For now, I think it's nap time!
Kia Orana!!
