Ships log... We have travelled 3485 ks over the last 7 days. Our ship the Crown Princess is 289.6 mtrs long and 36mtrs wide. We departed Vancouver two hours late...bloody tourist running late ..lol. We sail for the first 2 nights and on the sunday 15th we are sail into Glacia Bay and wow. all the way through the passage you see the ice packed mountains starting to close in until we reached the Glacia. It truly is awesome to see. The captain pivots the ship so all can get a great view and we linger in the bay for about 3 hours. It's strange to see this huge glacia and icebergs around us while there are people in the heated pool with steam rising !! The sun was out and we had clear blue skys, how lucky we were.
We set off again heading for Juneau. The Crown is a big ship with loads of places to eat, clubs, casino spa, fitness and of course entertainment everywhere. Great to not be living directly out of the suitcase for the next 6 nights too. On the second night we have dinner with 6 new friends from Perth. We arrive into the port of Junea and our tour sets off at 8.30. We visit a rainforest garden, mostly trees, moss ferns etc and only some plants flowering as very early in spring still. We visit Mendehall Glacier after a great coastal walk which took us to the base of a waterfall as well. Last stop today is the 'tramway' which takes us to a peak that overlooks the port. Nice town too.
We sail again overnight to our next port, Skagway. This is Klondike country. Gold rush fever was here. Klon**** summit has majestic views and we to the spectacular Yukon suspension bridge with roaring rapids below us. We are 57 feet above them and it's very windy in the middle. After leaving our bus driver spots bear!!! He slows and stops so we can watch the beautiful brown bear eating dandalines on the side of the road. From out of the bushes another bears joins this one is a caramel colour !! We have been really lucky to see not one but two.... Off we go to our Alaskan Salmon Bake. We are in a place called 'Liarsville". excellent simple food. Fresh cooked salmon over an open fire grate. This place is a recreation of a tent city from 1898 and very well done. Great tour.
Next day we dock at our final port, Ketchikan. Here we have nothing but grey skys and rain... our bus is delayed and we are left on the dock in the rain and get pretty wet...not happy but what the hell. It's a great looking town and has been kept looking authentic from days gone by. We go on another nature walk and see a timber mill then back to town. Back to the ship for a warm shower !!
Thursday the sea is pretty rough all day but it's sunny out so we sit up on top deck and watch a movie outside !! We lazed around, it's our last night on the ship and we meet up again for a final dinner with our Perth friends. Great night had by all
So. I wrote this while waiting for our number to be called to disembark this great ship. Was a brilliant cruise from start to finish. We are in Vancouver for just one more night before flying home tomorrow. And suddenly 4 weeks have gone !!! Each part of this holiday has been different but all have been great. Where to next??? mmmm not sure but will definatly have to start planning for the next big trip. Till then... Cheers x
