Still more rain!! With only two full days left in Kyoto, and much to see, we prepared ourselves as best we could and headed to Tambaguchi station to catch the JR train to Saga Arashiyama and the world famous bamboo forest. It's like entering another world - peaceful, beautiful, and with the overcast sky, quite dark. The bamboo path leads past the Tenryu-ji temple and up the hill about 900m to the summit and monkey park (where people are put in cages to feed the monkeys, not the other way around). The rain was getting a bit heavy to attempt the summit, so instead we entered the Tenryu-Ji temple and wandered around its amazing Zen gardens dating back to the 14th century, and had a picnic morning tea sheltering in the main temple verandas. The gardens were lush, mossy, and the maple colours just showing a hint of Autumn. Very pleasant way to spend a morning. We left the bamboo grove and followed the river in an attempt to see the famous Tongetsu-Kyo bridge, but the rain thwarted us once again - accompanied by thunder this time - so back through the bamboo to the station and home for a late lunch. After a quiet afternoon, we caught the bus back to the Nishiki market to a restaurant called Warai to try some Kyoto Okonomiyaki- fried cabbage, vegetables, pork, eggs and/or noodles, flattened into a thick pancake, and topped with sweet soy and mayonnaise (optional). The rain had finally stopped, so we walked a few blocks to the narrow street Ponto-cho, full of lanterns and fancy restaurants, that follows the river for several blocks.
