"Down in Kenya where the Masai roam
And the grass grows tall on the veldt"
- Warren Zevon, 'Mama Couldn't Be Persuaded'
Ok, so last time I posted I was in Arusha (4 Aug). Now I'm in London, and tomorrow I'll be in Venice, but for the sake of simplicity, let's just pretend I'm still in Kenya.
Our 3 day / 2 night excursion to the Serengeti and Ngorogoro Crater was amazing. We saw 2 leopards, a black rhino (thus completing our big five bingo card), 2 cheetahs, a jackal, some hyrax (google them, it's easier than me explaining what they are), heaps of lions, hyenas, hippos, flamingos, ostriches, other birds... I'm sure I'm leaving lots out. Oh, and dik-dik (tiny antelope). The thing besides the animals I'll remember about this part of the trip is the bumpy roads.M eze was wishing she took a sports bra. One day I may upload the video I took to show you how bumpy it was.
Marisa go stung by a bee on the side of her eye just as we were entering the Serengeti National Park on the first day, but it didn't swell up till the second day (and boy did it swell), and it was still bruised by the time we made it to Nairobi (see latest photo album).
In Meserani (where we left from to go to Serengeti, and returned to) we also visited the Snake Park (got a few videos of snakes eating chicks, but most of the time the snakes didn't seem very hungry... and the big ones only get feed monthly so we missed any guinea pig/rooster action), and went for a guided walk around a Masai Village (and gave away the last of my balloons).
That pretty much was the end of our 29 day tour with Acacia. We got dropped off in Nairobi around 6pm on the 9th, and were picked up by the Kuguru's driver, Mongi. Our two days in Nairobi were no less packed than our days with Acacia, and we mananged to visit the Masai markets, Carnivore Restaurant (all you can eat meat, including crocodile and ostrich... sometimes they have more exotic game meats but we weren't that lucky... still an awesome night), animal orphanage (where we got to go into the cheetah's enclosure - see photos), giraffe park, and ostrich farm. We also visited the Softa factory (the soft drink company the Kugurus own).
Nairobi is a surprisingly nice city. And the Kuguru's hospitality was amazing. We definitely want to go back to Kenya and see the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Mount Kenya and spend more time in and around Nairobi, but our three nights there were a good taster.
I've also uploaded one video coz the internet here in London is much faster than anything I've had for the last month, so test it out... I dunno how long it will take to load on your computers. If it's a goer, I may upload more videos next time I get a chance.
Hope you're all chugging along nicely.
