Craig and Efren's travels
Early rise and we headed back to Golden Rock for sunrise. Hard to believe, but the walk to the Rock was even busier this morning than it was yesterday, with pilgrims coming and going. Clearly there was a party up on the Rock that lasted all night long. Seeing the Golden Rock at sunrise was an equally mesmerizing experience. The lighting and reflection off the Rock changed as the sun slowly rose over the horizon. An added bonus was the monks that were collecting alms. We donated and found their lining up holding their bowls in the chill morning air very moving. We headed back to the hotel for breakfast. One thing to mention -- the level of service of the waitstaff at restaurants was surprising. Almost without fail, the wait staff were incredibly attentive and helpful. We checked out of the hotel and walked to the transit station for the truck ride back down to Kyaikto. We were in for a bit of a surprise -- it was basically a mad rush at the transit station with people jumping into and out of the trucks without any obvious semblance of order. Thankfully Nemu was able to bring order out of the chaos, and arranged for us to ride in the front cab of the the truck with the driver instead of in the back. This was much more comfortable than being in the back, and was a welcome respite from the mayhem outside. I'm glad we took the traditional way up the mountain, but was fine to get a little extra comfort on the way down! Back down at Kyaikto Mr. Aung and his family were there and ready to take us back to Yangon. We were on our way and soon left the lushness of Mon State behind as we approached Bago again. We planned to stop again in Bago to see a couple more sites that we didn't see on the way in. A couple hours later we were back in Yangon. Nemu was dropped near the Yangon airport to meet another client, and Mr. Aung brought us to the hotel. He was going to pick us up the next morning at 4:15am for our ridiculously early flight to Nyaung U to get to the famous temples of Bagan. Nemu would be our guide when we returned to Yangon at the end of the trip, so we didn't have to say "goodbye'. After checking into the hotel we took a taxi a few blocks away for for dinner at Fahrenheit, a Mexican restaurant not too far away. Not so hot. Then went to top of Sakura Tower to visit the rooftop Yangon, Yangon bar. Nice place with strong drinks. Great view of Sule Pagoda lit up at night with Shwedagon in the distance. After that we packed up and headed to bed excited to head to our next destination -- Bagan!
