We left Siem Reap and travelled the very long 5 hour journey to Phnom Penh by public bus. Phnom Penh is a very busy town. Today is a rather emotional day as we visit Tuol Sleng Museum which was security prison 21 used as a detention centre by the Khmer Rouge under the lead of Pol Pot from 1975 and 1978 where people were interrogated and tortured before being sent to the extermination camp. The personal stories shown in the museum and the experience of our own tour guide who was 13 at the time was very touching, even more emotional meeting two survivors.
After here we visit the killing fields, here there are 129 communal graves of these graves only 86 have been exhumed and revealed 8985 people. Most of the people were bludgeoned or stabbed to death to save money of bullets, and the bodies found include men, woman, children and babies. I can not put in to words the emotions that this experience arouse, but just think during the Khmer Rouge regime 25% of the population died either killed by the Khmer Rouge or starved from the hard work and lack of food. Imagine 4 people you know, neighbours, family, friends and imagine 1 in every 4 dying. A sobering thought.
