Colin and Jenny's Pure Mad Asian Travels
Yoyo, right its my turn to write this bad boy. Hello all.
Well, as much as I liked Bangkok, its a relief to be away from it. The heat and noise and constant attention from tuk tuk drivers starts to turn you nasty. Also, with the news from home that my Dad wasnt well and was taken into the Royal for a heart op, Colin took the very wise decision to get out of Bangkok asap and find somewhere slighly less chaotic before my head burst.
So, on Saturday we went to Ayutthaya, the capital of a Siamese empire during the 14th century. The hotel we stayed in had a stunning view of the river, but unfortunately our room was less than perfect- mosquitos, a blocked toilet and a roof with holes in it: 'if it rains, don't worry just move your bed to the other side of the room..' which seemed almost reasonable, except that there wasn't another side of the room...
Ayutthaya is absolutely beautiful, really incredible looking. The picture here if of a buddha statue thats been grown over by a bhoddi tree (the type that the buddha sat under when he achieved enlightenment), so its really important to the Buddist Thai people. We hired bikes to see all the Wats (of which there are many), spotting some lovely elephants on the way.
However, our map reading skills are less than perfect and we accidentally ended up cycling along the MOTORWAY which gains a gold star for the stupidest thing we've done so far. Plus, by that time my bike was falling apart and the handlebars kept coming off so while Colin was steaming ahead towards the sliproad, I was desperately trying to stay vertical. Don't think we impressed the locals very much with that.
In the afternoon, we took the rather stupid decision to see another Wat before catching the train back to Bangkok, but unfortunately it was bloody MILES away and by the time we got there we were ridiculously sweaty and dehydrated and just a complete state in general! All the other lovely Japanese tourists were jumping out of there air conditioned buses, and we turned up BRIGHT red and MANKY (Colins pristine white t-shirt had turned brown over a few hours). A tourist actually stopped to take his picture! I think he thought we'd built the temples, and had just finished right then.
So we were thorougly embarassed and after some deyhdrated nonsense talk and modern dance from Colin, we left with the mammoth task of cycling back to the ferry to get the train. We caught the train, with time to spare I may add, getting back to Bangkok for about 9pm.
A lovely tuk tuk driver (of which I thought there were none) took us to the bus station risking life and limb in order to catch our bus. However we missed the one to Phuket, but he managed to organise us one to Krabi, a mere 4 hours away from Phuket....so we hopped on and TWELVE hours later arrived. And then got a minibus to Phuket. So we had only been travelling for about 20 hours when we could have got a plane and got here in 1 for about the same price. Madness.
Anyway, we got to our hotel and went for a 10 minute 'nap' at about 3pm before trying to find Eleanor, however we slept in a bit and woke up at well... 7am the following day. Oops. Thankfully her flight was delayed anyway and ended up somewhere totally different! So, thats the plan for today, find Eleanor. Hmm. I have difficulties finding her in Glasgow city centre but im sure everything will be fine... :/
Anyway, I better go and try and upload these pics before my money runs out. Hope everyone's well and looking after themselves. Jenny xxxx
