Colin and Jenny's Pure Mad Asian Travels
Yoyo! (I left Colin to do the long one again! Har har!)
We went to Battambang on a bus from Phnom Pehn, which was delightful. A 5 hour bus journey had 3 stops, each with a meal. I was loving it!
By the time we arrived it was 3pm, and although the city looked really beautiful, we are now really conscious of how much time we have left and want to see as much as possible. There isn't that much to do in the city itself, so we decided with the 3 hours left of sunlight that we would do a quick tour of the surrounding highlights.
We hopped onto a moto each (I want to take one home. They are class.) and went straight to a temple about 20 km away (with the worst roads ever. Don't think my botty will ever recover.). The temple is at the top of a mountain that also has some caves, which were used by the KR to kill and store bodies. The caves used to be a place of celebration where musicians would play, but now its really sombre and quiet.
We were far too knackered to walk all the way to the temple, so we admired it from afar and went looking for out moto drivers again.
We then went to what the people of Battambang call the ''inspiration for Angkor''. They reckon that it came before Angkor Wat, but most people think thats probably b******s. Anyway, it would have been stunning 30 years ago but the KR destroyed it. It has been sort of put back together since then but its looking a little bit higgilty pigilty (which I think just adds to it).
We set off back to town (it was going to take an hour on those roads. aah!) when we experienced what they mean by 'don't think about going to Cambodia in the wet season'. Somehow flood waters from Thailand end up here, and the roads literally turned into rivers. The first river/road was ok, it was shallow enough not to give either of our trusty motos any problems. However the second river/road was a hell of alot longer and deeper (the local kids were loving having a swimming pool in their garden). So, trucks had to be used to transport vehicles and important tourists (ie us) to safety. We let the locals swim.
We thought we were safe! How wrong we were. We were assured that the third river was no problem and we could ride through the water. WRONG. Half way through the water was up to my shins and my flip flops were nearly lost. AGAIN!! However I made it to shore and me and mr moto man had a dance to celebrate.
Colshy wasn't so lucky. Him and mr moto man (number 2) were knee deep in the water pushing the moto through. The bike gave up and went for a nap, which I think is fair enough. I might have done the same if i'd been him.
The sun began to set and about a million mosquitos came out. We were stuck in the countryside with about 40 locals who were either shouting ''hello!!'' at me and Colshy, or taking random bits off the bike in an attempt to be helpful. However, it wasn't helpful and the bike went up to heaven with all the other broken bikes. Mr moto man (number 2) was seriously displeased.
We both jumped onto mr moto man (number 1)'s ANCIENT moto and got a lift back into town. High fives to him for being a gent.
We went to a restaurant and I got a fish that looked bloody terrified, and Colshy got a mammoth steak sandwich, washed down by many an Singha. It was early to bed though because we had to get up at 6am the following morning (for the second day a row!!) to catch the boat to Siem Reap.
The boat was all good. Actual leg room and everything. Stunning scenery but we kept getting smacked in the face by huge branches! Plus we got a lovely lunch of a meat based dish (it's best not to ask what it is here).
Anyway, thats us here now. We're getting up at 5am to see Angkor when the sun is rising, which all sounds lovely and pretty but what a stupid time for the sun to rise. Just because it's an early riser shouldn't mean that I am too. Stupid sun.
Anyway, I have completely fallen in love with this country. It's my favourite by far. Just driving around on the moto yesterday, watching everyone working and all the wee kids waving at us was so amazing. The people are so goegeous and arg its just brilliant.
Anyway, peace out chaps. Lots of love, Jenny xxxx
