So we left Australia after an amazing few weeks and had a 5 and a half hour flight to Singapore where we spent the night. At Singapore airport we were just planning a complicated route of buses and trains to our hostel after collecting our bags when we realised we could get dropped right to the door of our hostel for about £5....perfect! Our hostel in Singapore was really nice, much better than our bug-infested Perth accommodation! It was the cheapest bed we could find which meant it was a 16 bed mixed dorm and half the beds were doubles so there were a lot of people and we weren't expecting much, but it was spotlessly clean and each bed was in its own little booth so it didn't feel overcrowded. After checking in we went straight out to explore as we only had one night in Singapore and wanted to make the most of it. It was quite a walk from our hostel to the centre, especially in the heat and humidity so when we'd navigated our way through all the little streets we had a delicious cheap evening meal, then wandered around Clarke Quay, a beautiful waterfront area with lots of nice restaurants and bars. We'd exchanged enough Singaporean dollars to have a drink on the waterfront but unfortunately we'd forgotten that we hadn't paid for our hostel before we arrived so the cash had to go on that instead, but we still had a really nice time walking around. Our hostel was in an area known as Little India which was interesting, sari and gold jewellery shops galore! We found that cleanliness is quite important there. Shopping malls have little plastic bags outside for you to put your wet umbrellas in, and each restaurant has a letter displayed according to its cleanliness rating which was nice and useful. We found almost all the Singaporean people we met to be nice and friendly. All too soon it was the next morning and time to leave. Singapore airport is famous as it's huge and has all sorts of things such as computer terminals everywhere for everyone to use with free Internet, kinetic rain, a butterfly house, a cactus garden and loads more so we were definitely not bored there! Our flight however... Lets say it wasn't very relaxing. The flight was actually to Hong Kong, with a stopover in Bangkok and we were the only non-Chinese people on the plane (with the exception of 2 businessmen we glimpsed in the departure lounge). The sign asking economy class people to queue was knocked over as soon as the announcement was made to begin boarding! We felt sorry for the cabin crew because everyone wanted something and they wanted it immediately, there wasn't enough rice to go round and most people didn't want to settle for mashed potato. The shouting in the cabin also meant we struggled to hear the sound from our headphones but luckily it was only a 2 hour flight so we didn't rely on the entertainment system too much! We soon arrived in Bangkok where we will spend the next 33 days....exciting stuff!!
